Herbalism

Like many others before me, I was naturally drawn to the botanical world from a very young age. I won’t bore you with childhood memories spent in meadows and woodlands, but it is a curiosity and fascination that, to this day, frame the ways in which I understand plants and the greater ecological community.

My formal education began in college as a plant biology student. I studied organic chemistry, plant diversity, plant biochemistry, ecology, and more, setting the foundation necessary for a comprehensive understanding of herbal medicine. Since graduating Marlboro College in 2016, my studies have shifted towards spiritual disciplines of herbalism out of necessity, as science alone cannot teach us how to make sense of our world. I have had the pleasure to study under a diverse cohort of teachers and mentors. Feng xiao Liu, owner of Sinofilia Tea Shop, continues to help me navigate the world of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Doaist philosophy. I am currently a student at David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies (’22) and have learned from teachers including Tammi Sweet MS, Rosalee de Foret, Rich Mandelbaum, and others.

It’s a beautiful day for some tea! 🌞
There may still be ice, but we also saw snow drops blooming 🥰
Butterfly Wings is back in stock @sinofiliateashop! Come by this week to pick up a bag 🫖 🦋 it’s been going fast 🥰
Something about sunny days following snow storm make me eager for spring 🌷 I’m excited for a second year of market vending and working on my garden.
This book is a whirlwind, transporting through time and space at a dizzying rate to tell the stories of our most important cuisines. “Food and medicine formed a continuum everywhere in the ancient world,” writes Laudan as she highlights the importance that medicine, spirituality, and cosmology had on ancient cuisines. Of course, this is a mere section of an ambitious book. The most constant thing in world cuisines since agriculture began to dominate? Power and class disparity determine who will feast on the fruits of agriculture and who will toil over the earth in poverty to feed entire civilizations.
I have been totally shirking on here! Without a garden and markets, I feel like there’s not much to post about - which is silly, since we’re still open at @sinofiliateashop (except on snowstorm days) and online. I’ll try to do better 🤗
